Hi! I'm a doctoral student (just admitted to candidacy!!!!!) in applied mathematics. This is a second career for me. I was in education for a long time. I love StumbleUpon. I'm looking forward to connecting more with other stumblers who share similar interests. I'm especially interested in science, nature, environment, health, travel, tea, cheese, chocolate, crafts, and a few other things:).

I've noticed that I can only pay attention in my math classes for about 45 minutes. I thought it was just me. From this article it seems I was actually doing pretty well!

It is sad and really scary to me that this is possible at this day in time. Of course, on a college campus there will be individuals who are racist. But, for something to be published in a campus newspaper, it seems that there would have to be some sort of a review process in which some level of judgment would prevail.

The big push towards biofuels worries me. It does not seem to be well thought out. This may lessen our dependence on oil but at the expense of water, the shortage of which is rapidly becoming more serious than the oil shortage. Biofuels will also still pollute. Will carbon released from these be any better for people with asthma, or for the ozone layer, than burning fossil fuels? Why not plan for a change?

I've read before that Watson is a strong proponent of eugenics. In my opinion, that's basically a way to try to make racism look like science.
